Common Eye Diseases

The importance of taking care of your eyes is taught to you at a very young age, and is information that is carried around with you for your entire life. In order for you to be able to get around the world easier, you need strong eyesight. When you run into these common eye diseases, there could very be a chance that you may no longer have your most valuable sense. Preventative medicine is what is needed when it comes to your eyesight. Here is an inside look into the most common diseases of the eye, as well as how you can work to avoid them.

Styes

These are small abscesses or tiny infections that will pop up near your eyelid or the gland of the eyelid. This is something that can be removed and treated by a specialist if it's caught in time. Make sure to keep your hands clean at all times and keep all dirt and grime out of the eyes. This is the best way to avoid any of these common eye diseases.

Dry Eye Syndrome

This common eye disease will occur when the tear ducts in the eyes are not causing enough tears. From there you may experience dry and itchy eyes often. The tears that your eyes do produce will be very limited and very low in quality. You may also get this syndrome if you spend a lot of time in the outdoors where there is a lot of wind and dust.

Glaucoma

This is when things can get a little bit on the serious side, simply because glaucoma can cause you to lose your eyesight. Intraocular pressure in the eye will eventually cause complete degeneration, and within a year or more you could have lost sight out of one or both eyes completely. Have regular eye exams to catch Glaucoma in the early stages.

Pink Eye

This is a household eye disease that many parents with small children are familiar with. When you have a lot of bacteria on your hands or on your face, you can transfer that into your eye. When that bacteria gets in there, it will start to clog up the tear ducts and cause the eye to itch. This is an infection that does need to be treated with a day at home and simple antibiotics. Pink Eye can spread to others, so keep your hands away from your eyes, and wash them frequently.

Cataracts

You may actually see this happen with your dog as they start to reach a certain old age. Cataracts may be the culprit when you might see things in a haze. Your clarity will be altered, and you may not be able to see as well as you used to see. The lens of the eye is simply going to get worn out with age, and this is when cataracts can occur.

Macular Degeneration

When the retina of the eye has been compromised due to the beginning of macular degeneration you can expect some trouble. This eye disease can actually cause you to lose you central vision altogether. Of course this is simply what can happen as you begin to get a little bit older. Regular exams can help you be on the lookout for this, and other eye diseases.
