Cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in it's envelope, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. Surgery to replace the cataratous lens is preformed by removing the lens and replacing with an plastic implant. Diabetic Retinopathy is retina damage caused by diabetes mellitus, which can eventually lead to blindness. It effects up to 80% of all diabetics who have had diabetes for 10 years or more. Retinal detachment is a disorder of the eye in which the retina peels away from its underlying layer of support tissue. Without immediate treatment the entire retina may detach leading to loss of vision and blindness. A detached retina is a medical emergency and often caused by a traumatic head injury or concussions. Pterygium usually refers to a benign growth of the conjunctiva, most commonly from the nasal side of the sclera. It is believed to be caused by prolonged exposure to ultra-violet light (sunlight), low humidity and dust. Symptoms usually include, persistent redness, inflammation, foreign body sensation, dry and itchy eyes. Often treatable with medication and eye drops, only advanced cases generally require surgery.
