Contacts and Eye Care

After wearing a pair of glasses for years, you may finally be ready to make the switch to contacts. When contacts were first introduced, there were a lot of dangers associated with them, due to the hard materials used. Contact care was a large part of wearing contact lenses. Fortunately, with gas permeable contacts, eye care is quite easy. If you are looking to finally switch, and kick that old pair of glasses to the curb, then here are some excellent tips for contacts and eye care.

After your exam with your eye doctor you can sit down and discuss your contacts options with him. He will explain to you what needs to be done and suggest several solutions based upon your lifestyle. Your eyes will need to be measured so that you can get contacts suited to your eye shape and astigmatism, if you have it. With some astigmatism, perfect 20/20 vision is not possible unless you have specially designed contacts.

Once your prescription has been determined, all you need to do is get the prescription filled and take them home. If this is your first time, make sure that you have a professional show you how to put them in your eyes before you go home. There are a few different techniques that you can use that will allow you to place the contact into the eye with ease. Your optometrist will be able to show you what you need to do and how to do it.

Now, when you get them home and you start wearing them, you need to make sure that you take proper care of them! Your hands must always be clean before you take your contacts out and put them in. This helps to keep any dirt off of them or smudges. Clean the lenses on a regular basis as well. If you have continual wear contacts then make sure that you take them out to clean them at least once every few days. During the evening, before you go to bed is a great time to take them out and put them in the cleaning case. You should always use contact lenses cleansing solution instead of regular water.

If your vision blurs or your eyes become irritated then you may just want to take out the contacts altogether. Make sure that you have a pair of spare glasses so that you can give your corneas some much needed oxygen every once and while. Try not to wear your contacts for too long. This will only irritate the eyes and the lenses even worse and can cause further eye damage if you are not careful. It is vital that you make sure that you do not sleep in your contacts without your eye doctor's approval, otherwise you could risk getting infections in both of your eyes. If you feel that you can properly take care of your eyes and contact lenses then make your appointment today and say goodbye to glasses.
